Sony claimed that the D-88 was the world’s smallest CD player at the time. This was achieved by having an external 9V rechargeable battery and reducing the casing of the components down to it’s smallest size, leaving the actual disc to hang out on the sides. The unit played both 8cm and 12cm discs. Sony also applied this design to some it’s record players.
